Six years ago the first graduates of the Girls Program started college. It was a momentous occasion for them and for the whole community.
Fast forward to the present day: These girls have graduated with nursing degrees and have begun working at the Living Compassion property. They are there several days a week, providing much-needed care. Community members come and see them when they are not feeling well and the nurses take important vitals such as blood-pressure readings.
Each month, the health department works with hospitals to host a clinic for children under the age of five to check their weight and ensure they are receiving their inoculations. As department personnel were making plans recently to come to Kantolomba, they noted that they didn’t know their way around the community.
Well, one of our nurses, Sylvia, who volunteers at the hospital whose staff was planning to come to Kantolomba, said not to worry. Sylvia told them there are four trained nurses in the community who can assist!
So four of the nurses, Sylvia, Mirriam, Rachel, and Esther, worked with the health department to conduct the Under 5 clinic for the children of Kantolomba. Theresa said not only was it a great experience for our nurses, it was also wonderful for the community to have their own people caring for the children.
In 2019, our Bridge Walk theme was “Imiti Ikula Empanga…these little trees are becoming a forest.”
Indeed they are.
