Saturday was our big work day with the Kantolomba community to begin
accomplishing the tasks on the fourteen-point list we had agreed to. We
started with an early rendezvous with Ignatius and a pick-up truck “taxi” at
the hardware store to load all the supplies we had purchased during the
week: two hundred meters of water pipe, paint and brushes, nails, shovels
and pick axes. When we arrived at Kantolomba at about 8:30 AM, we found
large groups of people, mostly women, already hard at work, setting the
fence posts around the school and using pick axes and shovels to create the
long ditch to bring water up to the school.
We eagerly put on work gloves (plastic latex gloves, the only ones we could
find) and headed off with hammers, shovels, and smiles. Some of us focused
our attention on helping out with the fence while others set off for the
ditch.
Here in pictures is our day in Kantolomba.
