Theresa update: This is the first update on our efforts to bring Theresa to the United States. Over the weekend 6:00 a.m.: Jen arrives in D.C., exhausted, and spends the layover waiting for the flight to Boston, calling everyone we can think of to make sure Theresa has made it safely home. By noon we find out she is on a plane back to Zambia. By 2:00 p.m. she is safe and sound at home. We have talked to her on the phone. She is tired and disappointed and very glad to hear we are not giving up! We set up for her to have passport photos taken first thing Saturday morning. We email a woman in the Sangha who works at a U.S. Embassy abroad and happens to know the person who approves visas in Lusaka! She is going to call and cancel Theresa's visa first thing Monday morning and set a new visa in motion, though, of course, the passport must come first. We try calling Godfrey, our IT person, who we remember has connections to the passport office in Lusaka. We can't get through. We call Theresa again and ask her to call him. It is now too late to call anyone in Zambia. Crack of dawn east coast time Saturday: We contact Godfrey. He has put his whole life on hold and has already set the passport process in motion. He has taken Theresa to the police station to report the missing passport. They have gone to the High Court to file the missing passport and visa (we have NO idea how they pulled that off on a Saturday). He plans to leave for Lusaka Sunday night in order to be in Lusaka first thing Monday morning. Meanwhile, a woman with connections to the Zambian Embassy in D.C. is helping us with the visa. "Do you have a copy of her passport?" Wow! We NEVER thought to tell Theresa to make a copy! Darn! Wait, we just opened a new bank account before we left and had to make a copy of the passport for that account. We email our new friend at the bank to get the passport copy. It's Sunday now in Zambia. Nothing we can do today. Everything is poised for Monday morning.
